The forecast maps below show the probability that LGMI will be less than -1.5, in other words, the likelihood of a severe drought, during 10-day periods over the next 40 to 50 days. These forecasts are based on differences in rainfall probability for the three El Niño Southern Oscillation phases. For a more detailed description of the LGMI, please visit the website of the Alabama Office of the State Climatologist

Use the drop-down menus on the left to see maps of probable drought for other periods. The default maps are for the current ENSO phase. Click the radio button to see maps for probability of severe drought for other phases or select "Compare phases" to see maps of drought probability for all three phases side by side.

We also have graphs that show values of LGMI for the past 30 days as monitored by automatic weather stations and a forecast of LGMI for the next 30 days. Click here for a map of available weather stations.
